چکیده

We present polarimetric maps of the Circinus galaxy nucleus in $BVRI$ bands, obtained with VLT/FORS2. is closest Seyfert 2 and harbours an archetypal obscured active galactic (AGN). Recent high angular resolution imaging revealed that a major fraction its mid-infrared (MIR) emission coming from polar region. Previously, we demonstrated these observations are consistent model compact dusty disc hyperboloid shell, resembling hollow cone on larger scales. Here focus AGN core, up to 40 pc central engine, compare radiative transfer models. Polarization reveal conical structure, coinciding ionization cone. The wavelength-dependence polarization degree indicates scattering dust grains producing polarization. observed ($\approx1-3\%$) lower than predicted by models; however, this only limit, since stellar dominates total flux optical. angle ($\approx30$ degrees) reproduced illuminated tilted anisotropic source. An accretion aligned axis, alternative geometries, such as paraboloid or torus enveloped ambient dust, inconsistent data. conclude optical supports earlier evidence for presence region, tentatively associated outflows.

Anisotropic X-ray emission in active galactic nucleus accretion discs

Straightforward models of X-ray reflection in the inner region of accretion discs predict that the primary X-ray flux and the flux reflected off the surface of the disc should vary together, albeit with a short light traveltime delay. Most of the observations, however, show that the X-ray flux can vary while the reflected features remain constant. Here we propose a simple explanation for this. ...

Timescale of variation and the size of the accretion disc in active galactic nuclei

This paper sets out to measure the timescale of quasar variability with a view to new understanding of the size of accretion discs in active galactic nuclei. Previous attempts to measure such timescales have been based on sparsely sampled data covering small ranges of time. Here we combine data from two large scale monitoring programmes to obtain Fourier power spectra of light curves covering n...

Simulations of star formation in a gaseous disc around Sgr A– a failed Active Galactic Nucleus

We numerically model fragmentation of a gravitationally unstable gaseous disc under conditions that may be appropriate for the formation of the young massive stars observed in the central parsec of our Galaxy. In this study, we adopt a simple prescription with a locally constant cooling time. We find that, for cooling times just short enough to induce disc fragmentation, stars form with a top-h...

A strongly magnetized turbulent accretion disc model with application to active galactic nuclei

We develop a model of thin turbulent accretion discs supported by magnetic pressure of turbulent magnetic fields. This applies when the turbulent kinetic and magnetic energy densities are equal to or greater than the thermal energy density in the disc. Our model applies to both stellar mass and galactic mass accretion engines. However, a primary motivation comes from the 30–40 per cent contribu...

Reflection spectra from an accretion disc illuminated by a neutron star X-ray burst

Recent time-resolved X-ray spectra of a neutron star undergoing a superburst revealed an Fe Kα line and edge consistent with reprocessing from the surrounding accretion disc. Here, we present models of X-ray reflection from a constant density slab illuminated by a blackbody, the spectrum emitted by a neutron star burst. The calculations predict a prominent Fe Kα line and a rich soft X-ray line ...
